Mesothelioma Staging.
Staging of mesothelioma cancer will determine the treatment that can be offered. Currently there are three staging methods in use for pleural mesothelioma. The three staging systems are the Butchart system, TNM system, and the Brigham system. The Butchart system is the oldest and the Brigham system the latest. There is not staging for peritoneal mesothelioma.Butchart System for Mesothelioma staging.
Stage 1: Mesothelioma is confined to the pleura of either the left or right lung and possibly the diaphragm of the same side.
Stage II: Mesothelioma has spread to the chest wall or the esophagus, heart, lymph nodes and pleura of both sides.
Stage III: Mesothelioma has extended beyond the diaphragm into the abdominal cavity and peritoneum. Lymph glands outside the chest may be involved.
Stage IV: Metastasis or spread of the tumor through the blood stream to other organs of the body.
TNM (Tumor, lymph Nodes, Metastases.)
